With the conclusion of the book of Deuteronomy, a new era began under young Joshua, Moses’ successor, who led the people of Israel across the Jordan into the land of Canaan to possess the land and divide the 12 tribes into their places as prophesied by Jacob in Genesis 49. After Joshua, there were anointed leaders known as Judges who arose to serve both as military and spiritual leaders for the people. The story of Ruth includes a focus on her faith that preserved the righteous bloodline through the centuries to Jesus Himself. In the two books of Samuel we first see that under God the prophet ranks above the king, for it is he who is inspired to choose, anoint, and crown Saul and David as the first two kings of Israel—and also to guide them with both approval, when they were right, and reproof (or judgment), when they were wrong. In the books of Kings and Chronicles, key highlights concerning the reigns of King David and Solomon are reviewed with a continued emphasis on the ministry of the prophets of God, who retained continuous contact with God and therefore remained more powerful in their message which guides mankind in obedience to God. Lastly, in the books of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther there is restoration for the people of God both spiritually and physically through these godly leaders.
